This is a sustainable product. Fish-leather is a by-product of the fishing industry in Iceland, produced by up-cycling RAW material that would not be used otherwise and using renewable hydro and geothermal energy.

Fish leather, or fish skin leather, is tanned fish skin: a real leather, not an imitation. The skins come from salmon, cod, wolffish and perch caught for food, and are tanned in Iceland using geothermal and hydro energy. Without tanning they would simply be discarded as waste from the fishing industry.
It does not smell of fish. The tanning process removes the natural oils entirely and replaces them with tanning agents, leaving a material that smells like any good cow or sheep leather.
Most fish leather runs between 0.6 mm and 1.0 mm thick, which makes it sound delicate. It isn’t. In cowhide the fibres run in a single direction; in fish skin they interweave in a cross-structure, and that gives the finished leather a tensile strength that often exceeds cow leather of the same thickness.
That combination — thin, light and genuinely tough — is why it suits wallets, card holders, watch straps, bow ties and jewellery, where bulk is the enemy. It is soft enough to hand-sew, and most domestic machines handle it with a leather needle.
Salmon leather is the classic: small, visible scale pockets, very flexible, and available in the widest colour range. Wolffish leather is smooth and scale-free, often with dark natural markings — soft, durable, and hard to find elsewhere. Cod has a rugged, open texture that suits bolder designs. Perch carries larger, more prominent scales for a strongly tactile pattern.
We hold all four as fish leather hides, panels and offcuts, finished in our own studio in Iceland — including inkjet and artistic dyeing that produces colours you won’t find from mass-market tanneries.
